This watercolour and bodycolour work on paper is by the marine artist Thomas Bush Hardy RBA (1842-1897). Titled The Mouth of the Tyne after a Gale, the painting depicts two sailing vessels navigating a turbulent sea near a rugged coastline featuring the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and a lighthouse. The artist has utilised watercolour washes combined with white bodycolour highlights to convey the motion of the waves and atmospheric weather conditions. The work is signed, inscribed with the title, and dated 1871 in the lower-left corner. It is housed in a decorative wash-line mount and a gilded wooden frame featuring a nameplate. The reverse bears a typed gallery label (with receipt) from Christopher Wood, London, which provides cataloguing details and confirms the provenance.
