Francis Wynne-Thomas (British, 1907-1988). Whitby Fishermen. Oil on stretched canvas. This mid-20th-century figurative composition depicts three fishermen in conversation on the deck of a vessel. The work is executed in a structured style characteristic of British social realism, using bold, planar brushwork to define the forms of the figures and their heavy maritime clothing. The painting is signed F. WYNNE THOMAS / in the lower right corner. It is presented in a wide-profile frame with a burr-wood veneer and a neutral linen slip. The verso features several labels: a handwritten paper label identifying the artist, title, medium, and dimensions; a printed exhibition label from James Bourlet & Sons Ltd. confirming its inclusion in the 1955 Royal Academy Exhibition; and a second James Bourlet & Sons Ltd. fine art packer’s label with reference H 13766. A property reference label is also attached to the stretcher.
