A set of fine bone china cabinet plates produced by Spode, England. This series features intricate polychrome and gilt transfer-printed designs inspired by 8th-century Northumbrian illuminated manuscripts. The decorative motifs include the Four Evangelists depicted as the man, the lion, the bull, and the eagle, alongside enthroned figures, angels, and complex interlaced Celtic and Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic knotwork. Each plate is finished with a wide border of gilded Celtic knotwork. The reverse of the plates, as exemplified by The Durham Plate, features a comprehensive printed backstamp detailing the historical significance of the original manuscripts, citing their survival through Viking and Norman periods and their connection to the Lindisfarne Gospels and the monasteries of Jarrow and Monkwearmouth. The bases are marked with the Spode factory mark, England, and Bone China.
