A set of five contemporary ceramic spice jars with matching lids, produced by Spode as part of The Blue Room Collection. Each jar is crafted from fine white earthenware in a cylindrical form, featuring a domed lid topped with a pointed knob finial. The jars are decorated with distinct blue and white transfer-printed scenes and borders sourced from Spode’s historical archives. Each jar is labeled within a blue cartouche for a specific herb: Bay features the Tower pattern depicting a fortified bridge and castle; Mixed Herbs shows a pastoral landscape with a pagoda and palm trees; Parsley displays scenes from Aesop’s Fables including The Dog and the Shadow and The Tortoise and the Hare; Basil features a pastoral scene with a seated couple; and Thyme is decorated with a large botanical floral bouquet. The base of the jars bears a blue transfer-printed mark: THE SPODE BLUE ROOM COLLECTION, the specific pattern name, FIRST INTRODUCED c. 1814, Reproduced from a hand engraved copper plate, and the stylized Spode factory mark above MADE IN ENGLAND.
