A large-scale watercolour on paper, with evidence of bodycolour or gouache highlights used to define the crests of the waves. The composition depicts a dramatic maritime scene with turbulent, white-capped waves crashing against dark, rocky outcrops. The sky is rendered with heavy, dark storm clouds using a cool palette of blues and greys. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner R. THOMPSON, LAMBERT, . It is presented in an ornate gilt wood and composition frame decorated with a repeating foliate pattern and a beaded inner border. The technique and subject matter are characteristic of the late 19th or early 20th-century British maritime school.
