A pair of maritime watercolours with bodycolour highlights on textured paper by Alexander Harwood. Both works depict the steam trawler Polar Prince with the North Shields registration SN.171 coming in and going out the River Tyne. The vessel was registered to Irvins of North Shields. The first composition shows the vessel navigating choppy swells with a lighthouse visible on the distant horizon, surrounded by seagulls. The second work depicts the ship in calmer waters with a staysail deployed. Both paintings are executed in a detailed ship-portrait style with the vessel name and registration clearly lettered on the bows and sterns. Each work is signed and dated A. HARWOOD 1932 in the lower right corner. The paintings are housed in matching modern stained wood frames with gilt-effect inner fillets and pale mounts. This vessel famously ran aground on the Black Middens and was reported in local papers
