Now a retired Trawler man from Blyth J.E. Thompson has produced this coastal landscape titled King Edward’s Bay and Tynemouth Priory, executed on paper. The composition depicts the historic ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle situated on a rugged headland above the sandy cove of King Edward’s Bay, with a breakwater visible in the distance. The work is rendered in a realist style with visible, expressive brushwork used to capture the movement of the churning surf and the atmospheric sky. The painting is signed J.E THOMPSON in light blue to the lower right. The verso of the frame bears a manuscript inscription on the backing board: King Eddys Bay + Priory Castle Tynemouth. The painting is housed in a dark wood-effect frame featuring a gilt inner slip and a cream mount.
