John Darby (British, 20th century). A bustling evening market scene in a British town, executed in watercolour with gouache highlights on paper. The composition depicts numerous figures gathered around canvas-covered stalls set before a row of buildings, including shopfronts for S. Spurr and the Red Cow pub. The work is rendered in a descriptive, illustrative style typical of early-to-mid 20th-century topographical studies. The painting is signed JOHN DARBY in black uppercase letters to the lower right. The work is presented behind glass within a cream-coloured mount and a simple black wooden frame.
