A pair of late 19th or early 20th-century British school coastal seascapes executed in oil on board. Each work depicts a maritime scene featuring high, rugged cliffs and numerous seagulls in flight above a turbulent sea. Several gaff-rigged sailing vessels are shown navigating the waters under expansive, atmospheric skies filled with heavy, overcast clouds. The artist has employed a textured technique, using impasto to highlight the white crests of the waves and the plumage of the birds. Both paintings bear indistinct marks or monograms in red pigment to the lower-left corners; in the left-hand painting, the mark consists of three or four slanted red strokes, while the right-hand painting shows similar indistinct red marks. Neither of these marks are clearly legible as specific characters as hidden by the frame. The works are housed in decorative gilt-composition frames with linen-textured inner slips.
